This is the frontpage of a webbased game me and 4 of my friends are making for a project.
The full name of the game is: Mafia Cosa Nostra: traces of T.E.D.
Players are members of fictional mafia families and own a bar. The bar gains them money, with which they can buy hitmen (among other things).
The goal of the game is
a) ultimate personal richness
b) ultimate power in your own family
c) ultimate power for the family
A better description is on it's way ^^
I'm in charge of the webdesign, YAY
We have just started the project and the game won't be finished until February 2006.
Stay tuned, it's gonna be really cool!
I would really appreciate constructive comments, because I'm no designing pro and I would really like to improve my skills.
Well, you're off to a great start. Some little things I can see in an otherwise great design...
* Is there any reason why you have separated the menu options in pairs? I'd add a bullet between "login" and "signup" and so on with the others, for clarity's sake.
* Grey on white does not read well... (Copyright at bottom).
* The fonts in the text might be small for some users, but if there is a way to change stylesheet or font size in the web, then that wouldn't be a problem.
More usability tips than anything, I know... But as I said, the design itself looks really good.
Thank you for your tips
There is a reason I seperated the menu items the way I did: I seperated them on subject (it's accidental the separation is in pairs). The other pages - which have yet to be made - will have this seperation too
The grey might be a little to light, but I made it hard to read on purpose. It bothers me when copyright notices are big and bold on a webpage. The copyright notice shouldn't attract too much attention and the darker I make it the more attention it attracts. But I will darken it a bit, because I can hardly read it myself now ^^
The fonts in the text are indeed a little smal. That was a problem for me too. I tried different font sizes but that made the design only ugly and sort of amateuristic. The targetgroup of our game are (mostly) boys between the ages of 13 and 40 so I hope reading won't be too much of a problem. I think I'm gonna use a bigger letter for the in-game pages, for better readablility.
Thanks again for your critics! I hope other people will spill their oppinions as well (I would really like this game to be actually played )

the design is already very good and suits PERFECTLY the theme of the site. The black and white is so appropriate for mobsters
The design reminds me of a newspaper- maybe you could have a small section easily accessible on the frontpage for assets, allies, and enemies.
Maybe move the start of Home, login, signup etc down a bit so it fits between the blood and the start of the bottom white background section, so its off his body a bit.
And a change of font to something more "gangster"- I'll think about one to recommend if you like?
All over the design is perfect for the website purpose!
Looks great to me!
although i'm not a fan of lots of white space on web-pages ...
have you considered a darker toned theme?
(love the blood splatters btw, perfect!)
Thank you, magiik!
I tried to make it look like a newspaper, so it's great to hear it actually does I will move the menu down a bit and see how that looks.
About the change of font: I'm not quite sure. I tried many different 'gangster-like' fonts but a more gangster-like font seems to mean a less old-newspaper-like design But if you can find a gangster-font that looks good in a newspaper that'd be super
Oh and before I forget: MERRY CHRISTMAS!

yay for the blood! I hate blood normally but this was FUN!
I have tried different color schemes, but I'm very bad at combining colors.. It always turns out to0 dark to too bright

heh,
i suppose you want white because of the newspaper page, but maybe sepia tones would look good? Like that old-ish Godfather movies look...
Course i have no idea really, you certainly know what you're doing more than me!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
