Font: MACHINATO - preview 1.0 by jelloween Font: MACHINATO - preview 1.0 by jelloween
UPDATE 17-07-2007 Get Machinato here (with a 75% discount until July 31st)!

---

So yeah, I changed the name of the font. Turned out someone else had already taken Morticia :(
Machinato (pronounce Ma-ke-na-toh) is sort of a tribute to the Italian lessons I'm taking at the moment. 'In machina' was the first sentence I learned :D

There are now 10 different styles in the font family (extralight, light, regular, semibold, bold and their oblique counterparts). I think I will be finishing it this or next week.

I'm still in doubt if I should sell Machinato on Myfonts or try to get it included in the linotype library. That'd be awesomely cool but I don't know how much I would earn from the sales and if the font is good enough...

While I ponder some more about the above issue, please enjoy the preview!

By the way, I think the name 'Machinato' is way better than 'Morticia' which sounds quite sinister. Morticia really doesn't fit your design in my opinion.

Absolutely wonderful design! I particularly like the design of the 'b' and the bottom of the stem of letters like 'a' and 'u' going inwards.

I just checked the letters for Esperanto (they are considered distinct letters and have their own dictionary sections) and they look great! :)

This sound like a great question to float at Typophile.com, if you ask me. Get the answer straight from the horses' mouths. Also, do a search, since I'm vaguely recalling several discussions about this specific topic.

I always buy my typefaces on MyFonts because of the convenience and the bulk discounts. I might buy through Linotype's FontExplorerX if it had the discounts and was in general just a better store.

MyFonts is far and away the best font store, if you ask me--in fact it is more than a store, but also a kind of maintenance and repair shop for a user's fonts. If I can get it at MyFonts I almost always will, except in the case of Adobe fonts that Linotype sells through MyFonts, because at Adobe.com or Veer you get Adobe's more friendly EULA.

MyFonts is great for developing a relationship with your customers, some of whom make really useful bug reports occasionally. At least one of the addicted MyFonts customers does, anyway. :)

haha, you are soooo addicted ;) but seriously, I have never received a bug report in the entire time (= a bit more than a year) I am selling through myfonts...

Some of the designers can be a little sloppy, though in the case of a certain JD a certain sloppiness is part of his consistently best-selling style. :)

Usually the sloppiness I report is something wrong with the accented characters for Esperanto, so if you don't have those characters then you are much less likely to get a bug report from me. :)

I see :) Machinato does have Esperanto characters (thanks to your request)!

Great! Thanks!

There are other problems, too, but whether I would report it or not depends on the source. One error by a meticulous designer was overlapping outlines in the discretionary 'etc' ligature in one of the Nosta fonts; this was fixed immediately and free upgrades were given when I reported it. The overlap would only cause problems in some programs. By comparison, when I get a Lanston or Rimmer font, problems of that sort seem to be included in the relatively low prices, and the EULA practically encourages you to fix problems for yourself. (And so does Robert Bringhurst in his book, where he says Rimmer's Amethyst requires quite a bit of work, although Bringhurst's standards are higher than mine. :) )

Absolutely stunning, as always. I got no experience in selling fonts, I always offered mine for free on DA, but I am planning on trying to sell some, so I might ask you stupid questions soon ;)
But I hope you'll be very successful selling this one, wherever you want to sell it. It's absolutely beautiful!

My font plans are to sell on myfonts AND other sites (like Veer, etc).

Linotype doesn't give much commission because they consider themselves so "official." Myfonts gives the best return of any distributor I've found.

Also, what is your method for defining Itals? Do you use a slant function and then edit thereafter, or do you redraw every glyph?

hmm, I don't know about the other sites. I've looked at fonts.com and they require you to send every new font you make on a cd through the mail. As I am living in the Netherlands that'd take far too long + shipping a cd isn't that cheap. I have not yet checked out Veer as I couldn't find the 'submit fonts' section on their site (I always ended up on the 'submit your photographs' page..). Do you just have to contact them through email for information?
Linotype seems nice, but in the contract they do not state how much the designer earns from every sale..

About the italics: I'd redraw the characters that need redrawing (like b, e, g etc) in the upright position and the slant them. I personally think editing slanted glyphs is much harder than editing upright ones.

Editing slanted glyphs is a pain, definitely.

With Veer, just contact them and they'll patch you through to the right person. They are painfully slow, though. Be prepared to wait several months just for your font to be added to the database.
